Thou wilt turn, O God, and bring us to life

By the age of eighteen I had dropped out of high school and was serving time in a maximum-security prison for robbing three banks. In the decade after my release, my life resembled the American dream as I graduated from college, began doctoral studies and pursued the dating scene. But I only loved myself, and the promise of happiness waned with each passing year. Then in 2007, Christ called me out of the world through a series of supernatural experiences. This is my conversion story.

I was interviewed by Brian Fraga of Our Sunday Visitor for a couple of articles on prison and prison ministry for the November 3rd issue. Brian has done excellent work in the past for OSV on juvenile offenders, and his latest work admirably navigates a complex topic. Conversion stories can be a great source of hope and consolation as we witness the unexpected and mysterious work of the Holy Spirit. These stories record God's effort to penetrate our time-worn resistance, self-protection and ignorance in order to draw us to Him. In my case, on a morning like any other, God reversed the course of my life with the resounding intervention: "I love you and I forgive you", followed by an infusion of His divine love. With this love, the Holy Spirit overcame the wariness of an ex-convict, the skepticism of a trained philosopher, and the pride and sensuality of a man of the world. I set aside everything I thought I knew, and approached Christ with open, empty hands. I hope that my story will lead you closer in your union with Christ.
